Chapter 437 Batman is always one step ahead, Night Owl and the Sacrificial Pawn
In a dark corner of the universe.
"Are you alright, Night Owl?"
Grell…daughter of Darkseid. She collaborates with Night Owl to kill his father, Darkseid, and eradicate the evil bloodline from him within her.
At that moment, as she entered Night Owl's owl cave, she saw that it was pitch black inside. In the dim light reflected from the computer screen, Night Owl sat alone in front of the owl computer.
He had removed his helmet, revealing his mortal face beneath it.
This was an unexpected scene, as Night Owl hadn't revealed his true form to anyone in a long time. Greer's dark red eyes, inherited from Darkseid, darted around the corners of the rooms. She knew that if Night Owl was here now, it meant he was confident he could take her down at any moment.
Night Owl stared at the screen.
On the screen, Nightwing Dick Grayson, with his shapely buttocks sticking out, is using the gym equipment in Night Owl's territory to work out. His streamlined muscles, due to his low body fat percentage, stand out on his uniform like a peacock spreading its tail feathers.
On a secondary screen next to him, the image of the Space Hunter Wolf was lit up. The strongest man had his big foot resting on his space motorcycle, while his other hand was on a chain that was connected at one end to the iron hook hanging from the front of the motorcycle and at the other end to the iron chain around his waist.
"You've arrived."
Greer heard the owl's voice. The voice sounded hoarse and weak, as if something had been drained from it.
She walked up to Night Owl and noticed that his eyes were bloodshot, as if he hadn't slept for days and nights.
His eyes were filled with hardship and weariness, and he looked as if he had aged 10 years.
"I'll talk to you after I turn on the light," Greer said.
The owl did as instructed.
Soon the lights illuminated the entire Owl Cave, and Greer spoke up, "I've been keeping track of things in Atlantis, and Lord Orm is progressing exactly as we anticipated."
Night Owl remained silent, offering neither approval nor any other instructions, like a soulless shell. Greer didn't understand his state, but continued, "Preparations for Starro are also complete."
"Through Lord Orm, we were able to make the Conqueror Starro achieve what we wanted. That cosmic starfish, posing as a mind controller, was manipulated by you. In that respect, I admire you, Night Owl."
Seeing that the owl didn't react, Greer continued reporting what she was originally going to say:
"Over there, with the Red of All Beings constantly pressing down on them by Lord Anton A. Kane of the Corrupt Kingdom, the Blood Church members affiliated with the Red of All Beings are also plotting a scheme to make the Red of All Beings grow stronger in an abnormal way. They're always like this. As you showed me—the plant master Jack Wood once tried to make the Green of All Beings devour the Red of All Beings, and now the Red of All Beings wants to devour the Green of All Beings. When faced with danger, their first reaction is not to solve the danger, but to do everything they can to harm others, strengthen themselves, and then confidently believe that they can escape the jaws of the beast. They will never learn to cooperate with others, and that's exactly where we can take advantage of them."
"Darkthorn (Note: a magical character, a druid who wields magic, and like Botanist Jason Wood and Poison Ivy, a representative of the Green) has completely surrendered to the Red. This traitor of the Green will be the first opportunity for the Red to reveal its dark side to Batman. I have already introduced Lord Orm to them. Darkthorn and the Blood Church are now beginning to believe that they have Lord Orm under their control, just as you predicted, Night Owl."
She began, "And all of this, all of them, are like puppets being manipulated, pawns on our chessboard. Our plan to manipulate them has been a complete success. By then, the entire population of the Earth will have become users of the power of the Red of All Beings. Based on the intelligence we have gathered, these millions of people transformed by the Red of All Beings will be enough to become Batman's living batteries."
"And then there's Aquaman Arthur Curry. What you asked me to do has been accomplished; we've modified him while preserving his sanity. He was going insane in the trench for a while, and I thought we'd failed... But now, his connection with the Red of All Beings is fully established, and the powerful life force within him will become the key for the Red of All Beings to devour the Green of All Beings. Aside from the changes in his appearance, his intelligence has been almost completely unaffected, although this might be because he wasn't particularly intelligent to begin with. And Batman, preoccupied with the Kryptonian situation, hasn't even noticed the changes in Aquaman."
She turned around and sat on the edge of the computer console: "Batman is known for his intelligence, but you're even more so. He didn't even realize it was all your doing. General Zod knows nothing, and he can't give Batman any explanation."
"You already gave Parallax and the Ion Shark to Batman, and helped him take control of the Crime Syndicate. Everything is under your control, Owl."
The owl still didn't react.
This strange situation displeased Greer, but she continued, "I've secretly informed General Zod, asking him to find a way to meet Supergirl. Supergirl will then convey the message you want to give General Zod. So the final piece of the puzzle is complete; Batman will be enhanced to an unprecedented level, and so will Darkseid..."
She paused, then continued, "And Superman Supreme, have you figured out his location on the Origin Wall yet?"
Night Owl remained silent. Greer frowned, finally losing her patience: "What's wrong with you? Are you mute? I thought I came here to discuss the next steps with you."
She said, "Are you still hung up on the failure regarding the Möbius Chair last time? What does that thing even matter to you? Are you even listening to me?"
"It's all meaningless," the owl whispered.
His voice sounded somewhat dejected.
"What did you say?"
"It's nothing," Night Owl said.
He casually fabricated a lie to Greer: "What I mean is, these alone aren't enough to push Batman to his limits and make him able to fight the Anti-Monitor. We need Superman Supreme; he alone is worth all our previous plans. You should have seen the previous intelligence about Superman Supreme."
"Yes, that's right." Greer nodded.
This is why the Night Owl has no intention of hiding anything from the other party.
Even if Greer didn't try to hide it, what could she possibly notice? Night Owl could dispel her doubts with just one sentence. It was a clear case of intellectual superiority. Greer never realized that even though she was standing next to Night Owl as an ally, she was still a puppet being manipulated by him.
Chess pieces always fantasize that they are the ones playing the game, and in this respect, Grell and Lord Orm, the many members of the Crimson Clan, and even Starro are no different.
In front of the night owl...
Everyone else is just a useful tool, and Batman is no exception.
The owl pondered silently.
Batman calls those people his allies and the Justice League an alliance, not his dictatorial kingdom.
But Night Owl knew that Batman, like him, saw those people not as his teammates, but merely as human tools.
He'll do what he wants... and it doesn't matter if he doesn't.
But do you know what the saddest thing is?
The plan has changed. Although the process and outcome remain the same, the objective has shifted. The Möbius Chair has revealed to Night Owl that his actions have been futile, so Night Owl must now consider Plan B. He always has Plan B, even if it may seem extremely cruel.
He had once considered preserving both worlds simultaneously; his previous plans were all based on this attitude. But, as you know, things rarely go as planned.
"Abandoned pawn".
"Night Owl said."
"That's right. Lord Orm and his group are expendable pawns. All they need to do is enhance Batman to achieve our goals," Greer nodded and said. "I will continue to monitor the plan."
You see, a discarded pawn never feels like a discarded pawn.
But the people Night Owl truly cares about... the people Night Owl never intended to give up on...
After Greer left.
Night Owl turned his head and looked at Nightwing Dick Grayson, who was working out on the computer screen. Suddenly, he abruptly pulled the microphone next to the Owl computer to his mouth.
"You heard what I just said, didn't you, Dick? You've been here long enough to have a basic understanding of the situation, haven't you? How long are you going to keep up this act?"
Nightwing on the screen remained expressionless, as if he hadn't heard anything.
He then stuck out his American-style buttocks and slammed them against the gym equipment, as if it were just another ordinary butt-sticking out activity from among millions of other workouts. He wiped the sweat from his brow, a smile that could charm millions of girls curling at the corners of his mouth.
Night Owl shook his head: "I know you've tried many times, but don't bother. You won't have a chance to pass the information to Batman."
He put on the owl mask, then looked towards a corner of the room: "I know you planted a bug here, and over there..."
He glanced at another corner, then the helmet detected a bright spot: "Some nanobots? Old trick. Don't think I don't know, Metal Spirit."
He operated the Owl computer for a while, and soon a box suddenly rose from the corner of the room, trapping some tiny plant spores in the air, followed by a small insect lying in the corner of the room.
"Batman left you with a lot of tricks up your sleeve," Night Owl commented, "but they're all moves that have already been used before."
He said, "Batman sent you to my side, do you think I don't know what he's thinking?"
"you……"
Night Owl wanted to say something more, but he suddenly frowned.
He saw Nightwing, who had been working out, suddenly stop exercising. He stood up abruptly, as if he had received some instruction, groped around the gym for a while, and then found the camera. He smiled at the camera, revealing a set of porcelain-white teeth.
That's impossible.
When Nite Owl was secretly monitoring Dick Grayson, he used a hidden camera, a technology derived from the Father Box. Do you think it's a spy camera left behind by a pervert in a roadside motel? That easy to spot?
From Dick Grayson's perspective, this spot should just be an ordinary wall.
On another screen, the wolf, who was dozing off, suddenly turned his head... no, it wasn't that he turned his head, but rather that the necklace around his neck seemed to come alive, forcefully pulling his head to the side and almost breaking his neck... although this force was not enough to break the wolf's neck, but this is just a metaphor.
The necklace around his neck flowed like water, then coalesced into the image of Batman:
You've got one thing wrong.
Night Owl frowned and stood up.
Wolf was jolted awake by the necklace's unusual movement. He opened his eyes blankly, then three question marks floated above his head: "My god, Batman!? Why is it always you?"
Then Nightwing on another screen said:
"There isn't one spy, there are two—what does that mean, Batman? And what does 'stop pretending' mean? Wait, do you have any spies besides me? Oh, okay, okay."
He shrugged and flashed that smile that had captivated countless young women once again: "You know, Batman is always one step ahead."
Then he stopped smiling and explained, "These are the exact words Batman asked me to say."
Night Owl stared at the wolf on the screen in surprise.
Then a smile appeared on his lips: "What does it matter?"
He stared intently at the metallic head of Batman. "You didn't hear everything I said. Some parts were cut off, Nightwing didn't hear. Your plan was based on Wolfman and Nightwing; if I didn't let them hear, you wouldn't know. You've been waiting for me to confront them, to hear me reveal the information you wanted to hear. You succeeded. How does it feel now?" He said in a deep voice, "You should also be starting to realize that our goals are, for the time being, aligned, aren't they?"
He said, "We all want to kill the anti-surveillance agents."
……
……
……
"Although this isn't our first meeting, please allow me to introduce myself again... I'm Batman."
"I know you. Hello, Bruce. I could still feel you even during those times when I was under control."
"That's what Supergirl said."
"Enough of the small talk, I'd like to see General Zod."
She asked somewhat cautiously, "Is it okay?"
